Presented in the Spring of '92 and sold from June, the RS 125 Extrema replaces the previous series AF1 reaches its peak with the Futura Pro Sports, presented just before the Extreme.

As we saw in the 90s with AF1 AF1 Futura Summary Sport and '90, '92 sees the coexistence of two different models in two series: first the Futura AF1 Sport Pro and other new series RS Extrema Autumn '92 also available in new color replica Reggiani. However, unlike the '90s when both the Sports Summary and future are presented in time to take part in the Sport Production championship, for the '92 season, only the Futura Pro Sports is submitted in time to be entered in the league. So while the future Pro Sport is marketed primarily to be sold to those who run sports league in production, the RS Extrema lives its first year of life only as a street bike.

The Extreme is essentially a new bike to the future and an exciting new addition to "dress" features a new fairing and a beautiful, flowing tail, the most important changes are a brand new chassis - in aluminum - designed from scratch and to mark the sign of discontinuity with the AF1 series, a new aluminum swingarm with two arms instead of the single-arm steel previously used. Unfortunately, the quality of the Extrema is lower than the previous Futura in some detail how the rider and passenger footrests, but the quality of assembly and painting is still better.

The Extrema remains in production until the end of '94 and is flanked by two versions produced in Sport Production in '93 and coloration Reggiani Replica Replica Chesterfield in '94.

RS125 HISTORY

Racing improves the breed. Aprilia cut its teeth in the world's two stroke championships, so the public had the race team's R&D department behind them.

The Italians have always been good at making small capacity bikes. As far back as 1949, Mondial, Morini and MV Agusta dominated the championships. By 1998, new boys Aprilia had made their mark, first with the elbow-scraping Loris Reggiani in the 250cc class, then a year later with Fausto Gresini in 125cc class. It was at around this time the Noale, based factory launched the road legal AF-1 Sintesi, abike that most seventeen year old boys would have given their right arm to own. And for most lads of that age, that 's a huge sacrifice...

The AF- 1 was leagues ahead of anything of its time. It had a single-sided swinging arm for chrissakes, it was beautiful. The bike went through a fairly gentle evolution with first the AF- 1 Replica, then the AF-1 Futura before the RS was born in the guise of the RS125 Sportpro in 1993. followed by the RS125 Extrema. Along the way, many top GP riders made their names with the factory, giving birth to some stunning RS replicas: The likes of Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi, Max Biaggi, Marco Melandri and Harada all, having had bikes built in their honour,

Just seven years ago Casey Stoner took the 2000 Aprilia RS125 Superteens Championship, a series that still runs today in the UK. So, not only is the RS125 a dreams. We got our hands on a 2004 Manuel Poggiali Rep (2003-250GP Champion) and a brand spanking Jorge Lorenzo Rep (2006, 2007, 250GP Champion) to find out for ourselves just how good the kids have got it these days.

The simple fact that both of these bikes are in replica colour instantly knocks year off you. You see, I couldn't afford to own one of these little beauties in my teens so I had to make the occasional ten-minute blast on my wealthier mate's Futura. Despite the fact that these days I get paid to ride just about every modern sports bike (lucky bastard, I know). I've to come clean and tell you that I'm really very, very excited about having not one, but two 'full power' RS125s to myself for more than 10 minutes.

Jorge v/s Manuel
The ride up from DK's Newcastle under Lyme showroom up into the Peak District National Park is hilarious. Absolutely wringing the life out of old Manuel (the '04 Poggiali replica) in a bid to keep up with young Jorge harder than he's ever been ridden before, is the most fun I've had on two wheels in months. The fast, winding roads up towards Buxton provide the perfect playground for these two bikes as we race towards as imaginary finish line, motor screaming, slipstreaming on the straights and double daring each other stay off the brakes through the turns.

Power to weight ratio
For a while I'm convinced that the new RS125 has a lighter weight and smaller frame is aiding both horsepower and aerodynamics as Jorge clears off from the lights and steals yards out of the corners on Manuel.

An RS125 in bits isn't going to get you into a girl pants, so do your research before blowing your young life's savings. Fools rush in, so tread carefully in this highly populated minefield

In a world increasingly concerned about greenhouse gases. fuel economy and other such nonsense, the thought of owning and running a two-stroke is to many people, about as appealing as stripping off, covering themselves in jam and taking a baseball bat to the nearest wasp's nest. Some might even say that the noise wouldn't be too dissimilar and that there's every bit as much chance of getting badly stung.

But, if you were born in a time before the ice caps started to melt, and started riding before all the rainforests were chopped down, then you'll know just how satisfying a two-stroke is to ride and more importantly, how simple it is to work on. There's a lot less to go wrong with a two stroke and despite a reputation for fragility and unreliability owning and running a stroker can often be one of the most rewarding times in a biker's life.

The RS125 is actually a pretty reliable bike but it doesn't take a genius to work out that most will have been preowned by seventeen year olds, so you can expect neglect and bodged repairs. Here's what to took out for,

Engine and gearbox
The simple fact is that two-stroke motors need to be cared for. The longevity of the RS125 engine is heavily dependant on using the right grade of oil. Fully synthetic is the only choice, with Motul 800 Factory Line being a popular choice amongst Aprilla dealers. Most of the problems associated with the RS can be avoided by following the correct service schedules, though unsurprisingly, this isn't something that most teenage owners are any good at. The piston and rings will need to be inspected at 5,000 miles and pistons should be considered a disposable service item Genuine Aprilia pistons can be pricey, but aftermarket ones are readily available and don't give any known problems. Engine seizures are rare with the RS, thanks to a reliable oil pump and qood carburation as standard. The biggest known fault with the RS motor is weak main bearings - any hint of bottom end noise should mean you walk away. The latest model is very expensive to upgrade to full power from learner legal. Our advice is to not bother - just trade it in for a full power version.

The RS125 Came with 2 types of engine from 1996 to 1998 Aprilia fitted the Rotax 123 type engine, and from 1998 to present day they fit the Rotax 122 type engine. Please note both the 122 and the 123 type engines are 124cc the 122 and 123 is reference to the type.

Now the confusion is around 1998 (the swop over year) you can not always rely on the date of registration as the bike may have been made in 1996 but not registered until 1998 and thus has the 123 type engine fitted.

Mugen and Moriwaki tuned Honda CBR250R bikes

honda cbr250r mugen picture

Mugen is famous for their tuning packages for Honda models, but this time the Japanese tuner turned their attention to a Honda motorcycle, the CBR250R to be exact. With the new additions, the Honda is able to give off a more aggressive and sportier ride. This may sound all fine and dandy, but most of us won’t ever be able to take advantage of this package; it’s only available in Thailand.

The first thing to notice about this motorcycle is the red and black color scheme, but there is a lot more to it than that. The rider’s seat and the pillion are also colored in red with Mugen emblems, and the windshield has also been replaced.

The tuner has also added a new set of light alloy wheels, an upgraded chromed muffler, and ABS - a first-class system that includes a Combined Brake System (CBS) and an Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). However, they did let the 249 cc four-stroke, four-valve single cylinder DOHC engine untouched.

Mugen CBR250R

Famous Japanese tuning houses Mugen and Moriwaki have tuned the recently unveiled Honda CBR250R. The tuners have given the bike a performance and visual makeover.
Mugen CBR250R
Mugen is known to always paint the bikes tuned by it in black and red colour scheme. There are other subtle changes to the bike as well. Mugen have replaced the stick exhaust with their own stainless steel pipe which pumps up the power output slightly. Visually, the seat has been been done in red Alcantara seat cover and the wheels have stripes on them. The bike also gets rearsets, done in black and a number of Mugen styling parts like the alloy oil filler cap and crash bungs along with an iridium coated windscreen.
Moriwaki Honda CBR250R
The Moriwaki CBR250R too is essentially the same job as Mugen with changed paint scheme (in Moriwaki colours) and an inclusion of custom exhaust and rearsets.

Moriwaki CBR250R

The two companies, Moriwaki and Mugen were born in the early years of 70s. While Mugen was formed by the son of Honda founder Soichiro Honda, Moriwaki was formed by the son in law of Yoshimura.

So what’s on offer with this performance bike? Honda CBR250R is powered by a newly-developed liquid-cooled 250cc 4-stroke, 4-valve, single-cylinder DOHC engine that is fed by an electronically controlled fuel injection system (PGM-FI). We expect power of above 30 bhp and torque above 18 Nm from this Honda engine.

The CBR250R looks every bit superbike inspired. The CBR250R bears a full-cowl body that boasts a highly advanced design, yet highly functional. Inspired from the VFR1200F, the headlamp fairing of the CBR250R has killer looks.

Initially, we had assumed that the upcoming 250 cc motorcycle from Honda would be the VTR250 – not so.

Photos of the Honda CBR250R have been appearing on the Net for a while – and now we have official photos too. We have a couple of them here for you.

Honda bikes are known for their agile handling and steady maneuverability and the CBR250R is no exception. CBR250R is built on a highly rigid diamond frame that is both light and compact, offering superior maneuverability to the rider of this sports bike.

Pic: Not fat enough - but still good.

The Honda CBR250R comes with combined ABS, a first of its kind in a 250 cc class road sports model. CBS (Combined Brake System) and ABS (Antilock Braking System) are brought together in Combined ABS. This ensures limited skidding or wheel locking when applying brakes suddenly to avoid accidents or while using brakes over adverse road conditions.

The Honda CBR250R measures 2035 mm x 720 mm x 1125 mm and weighs 161 Kg. The “Sports Tourer” tag is what would best describe the Honda CBR250R rather than a race track motorcycle.

The bike is expected to be offered in Red (similar to the VFR1200F Red), blue and black. The Honda CBR250R will roll on MRF tyres of sizes 110/70-R17 at the front and 140/70-R17 at the rear.

The premium bike segment in India is fast attracting bike enthusiasts. Within the 200-300 cc motorcycles range, bikers now have six options to choose from, consisting of: Bajaj Pulsar 220, 220F, Hero Honda Karizma ZMR, Karizma R, Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Mahindra Mojo and now, the upcoming Honda CBR250R from April 2010 onwards in India.

Honda will launch the CBR250R in Thailand next month. Once, the specifications are leaked, we will you know all the details of the CBR250R. And of course, we’ll try to snag a test ride for you!

honda cbr250r vs aprilia rs 125

12. 2010 Aprilia RS125
2010 Aprilia RS125

Aprilia has always been the undisputed leader in 125 cc supersports, a market segment in which Aprilia has pioneered new concepts and advanced solutions, and developed technology that others have struggled to follow. Like all Aprilia motorcycles, the RS 125 has benefited from the sophisticated technology that has been developed over years of success in GP racing, and quickly transferred into production. Over the years, the RS 125 has forged a reputation as the standard setter for sports 125’s. Sales success has come naturally too, with the RS 125 topping the sales tables on major European markets. The RS 125 is the inevitable choice of riders entering Sport Production racing. And rightly so, because when the competition gets tough, there is simply no other bike like the Aprilia RS 125. The Aprilia RS 125 offers young riders the best in components and equipment, and a concentration of technical refinements worthy of a flagship supersport.

The following are just some of the main features of the Aprilia RS 125:

  • tried and tested yet extremely sophisticated Rotax two stroke engine;
  • super-rigid aluminium frame and swingarm derived from Aprilia’s vast GP experience;
  • upside down fork;
  • front brake with radial caliper and four opposed pistons;
  • RSV 1000 R style fairing, windshield and tail;
  • RSV Factory style, crossed spoke wheels;
  • analog/digital instrument panel with multi-functional computer;
  • RSV Factory style, forged steering yoke;
  • oval section racing silencer with riveted end plates;

STYLE

2. 2010 Aprilia RS125
2010 Aprilia RS125

The mean, cutting edge look of the new RS 125 tells you that this is a professional racing machine. The styling of the RS, like that of all Aprilia sports bikes, is the result of painstaking aerodynamic research.

The fairing, for example, was perfected by extensive wind tunnel testing, to guarantee great wind protection and minimum drag for maximum racetrack efficiency. The fairing, windshield and tail not only look mean and aggressive, but allow the RS 125 to reach a blistering top speed, eliminating all turbulence around the rider and allowing man and machine to become one.

The latest generation twin halogen headlight also adds to the mean look of the new RS 125, and delivers a high power light beam for enhanced visibility and safety at night. The sleek tail looks exactly like the tail of a GP racer. Thanks to the effort put into the design of the RS 125’s tail, not even the passenger seat disturbs the bike’s impeccable lines.

The crossed spoke wheels are not only lighter and more stylish, but safer and more reliable too.

ENGINE

The powerful but reliable, single cylinder, two stroke, Rotax-Aprilia engine needs no introduction. Over the years it has won a reputation for being unbeatable on the track and dependable on the road.

Still today, this engine boasts technical solutions that are state-of-the-art for two strokes, including a crankcase reed valve intake, liquid cooling, an anti-vibration balancer shaft, and an automatic mixing system. The RS 125’s engine has been constantly updated over the years to keep in line with the latest emission control legislation without penalising performance. A catalytic converter and precision carburation has won Aprilia’s single cylinder two stroke homologation to Euro 3 standards. And the amazing thing is that this has been achieved without losing out on performance: the Aprilia RS 125 engine remains the reference point for all 125 cc powerplants.

CHASSIS

3. 2010 Aprilia RS125
2010 Aprilia RS125

Without a doubt, the most advanced single component on the RS 125 is its frame. Developed from Aprilia’s vast experience in GP 125 racing, the RS 125 frame is made from cast aluminium alloy with cross-ribbing reinforcement. Despite its extremely light weight, this advanced structure achieves amazing torsional rigidity, setting the standards for Aprilia’s competitors.

The box section, aluminium alloy swingarm has the highest torsional rigidity of all production 125 cc swingarms. Differential side members enable the exhaust to follow a path that maximises engine performance and enables more acute angles of lean to be achieved on bends without risking dangerous contact with the asphalt.

The suspension too plays a fundamental role in ensuring not only the RS 125’s performance, but its safety and comfort too. The RS 125 can rely on an upside-down fork that has been optimised for maximum performance on the racetrack while also delivering a more satisfying ride on public roads.

The rear suspension features rising rate linkages based on Aprilia’s 125 GP racing technology, for excellent traction and superb comfort even over uneven road surfaces. The hydraulic monoshock that provides the damping for the swingarm is also adjustable in spring preload.

BRAKES

7. 2010 Aprilia RS125
2010 Aprilia RS125

Like any self-respecting supersport motorcycle, the RS 125 has to have the best when it comes to components. The braking system is the best available, and designed for maximum efficiency under competitive riding conditions. The front brake is a genuine state-of-the-art, high performance system with a radial caliper and four opposed pistons. In addition to the 320 mm front disc, the system also incorporates a radial master cylinder and aeronautical hoses for maximum precision and unrivalled braking power. The rear disc is 220 mm in diameter and is also equipped with metal braided hoses for perfectly balanced, high performance braking.

EQUIPMENT

The Aprilia RS 125 is packed with prestige components. Compact and impressively light in weight, the instruments include an analog rev counter and a multifunctional digital display with an on-board computer that can be operated from the handlebars. The speedometer, rev counter, coolant temperature gauge and exclusive racing chronometer put you in total control. The on-board computer even has provision for interfacing with the optical finishing systems used on racetracks.

Press Reviews

5. 2010 Aprilia RS125
2010 Aprilia RS125

"As you accelerate the Single seems to gain momentum in protest. But as the rpms progressively increase, the engine begins to spool up quicker. That glorious 2-stroke “braappp” matches engine speed and as soon as the crankshaft spins to that magic 10,000 rpm, the engine springs to life and finally rewards its riders with some decent acceleration." – motorcycle-usa

"If you are of normal size and keep the little engine singing in its sweet spot, she has plenty of juice to see triple-digit speeds and embarrass riders on liter-bikes in the tight stuff. Top speed attained at MSR Houston was an indicated 108mph on the longest straight and still pulling;" – 2wheeltimes

"The Aprilia RS125 is probably one of the best handling bikes on the planet. Its able chassis can easily cope with double the power. The Aprilia RS125’s brakes are astonishing, particularly so on the 2006-onwards motorcycles, which boast a sexy radial caliper up front, and the forks are beefy 40mm items for greater control." – MCN

Conclusion

9. 2010 Aprilia RS125

The Aprilia RS 125 can mark the beginning of a beautiful friendship between young riders and supersport bikes in general as the small two-stroke blast has all it takes to make one fall in love with quick acceleration and sharp handling, all in a user-friendly manner and for a customer-friendly MSRP of $5,499.

With the Bore x stroke size of 76 X 55 mm, CBR250R is able to produce massive power of 26.4 bhp (18.7KW) which peaks @8500 rpm (Electronically controlled) which makes the power to weight ratio at 163bhp/tonne. You don’t need to engine rev hard as the maximum torque of 22.9Nm produced @7000 rpm. As most of the power available at lower rev the bike will fire at traffic points.

The fuel delivery is handled by Honda’s patented PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection system) which ensures smooth and precise fuel delivery result more power with less fuel consumption. The fuel filter of CBR250R is placed outside the fuel tank to facilitate any intervention and reduce maintenance costs.

The engine mass is kept as low as possible by elimination of unnecessary parts and keeping the moving parts like rod and piston light weight. The friction between engine parts also reduced to significant level which you can feel in engine noise. The Iridium spark plug to squeeze out maximum from every drop of fuel. You don’t need to worry about overheating of engine as liquid cooling system ensures the engine temperature at recommended level.

The Honda CBR250R got six speed gear box with wet multi plate clutch. The short to long gear ratio means you can quickly move into the next gear. The gearbox is designed to exploit the characteristics of the engine at the same time ensuring quicker acceleration and low fuel consumption. The gear shift feel is very smooth and precise.

In order to reduce pollutant discharges, the CBR250R incorporates the latest technology in exhaust. The catalyst metal tri limit emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons to a minimum. An oxygen sensor placed in the exhaust allows the electronic control unit to further reduce emissions by ensuring the best possible combustion.

Chassis and Suspension

The CBR250R got twin spar steel diamond frame. This steel frame with perimeter configuration ensures optimum stiffness. The perimeter frame means the steering head jointed to the swingarm at shortest possible distance which makes the frame lightweight and rigid. Though, the global trend is towards aluminum perimeter frame, Honda chose steel frame which is stiffer than aluminum. The higher level stiffness of the frame has improved stability and handling qualities of new CBR250R.

The new CBR250R got hydraulic 37mm fork as a front suspension which offers travel of 130mm the rear got Pro-Link Monoshock suspension which offer 104mm travel. Thanks to the combination of the front and rear suspension, the CBR250R is able to deliver excellent ride quality with or without pillion.

The new CBR250R got special treatment in tire and rim department. The new CBR250r got new tires and rim from its larger CBR series to ensure firm road grip in any condition. The front got rim size of 2.75 x 17 inch with tire size 110/70 x17 the rear got 4 x 17 inch rim size with tire size of 140/70 x 17.

The combination of Chassis, Suspension and tires offers dynamic driving position on CBR250r that provides perfect control of the vehicle and which appears pleasant and comfortable on long trips leaving room for the concentration of the driver. It also made the bike weight limited to 161 KG.

Braking

Honda is known for making safest vehicle in the world and that’s what Honda proved in case of CBR250R. The new CBR250R got C-ABS (Combined braking system with Anti lock braking system). This is the first time any 250cc bike having feature like C-ABS. The Combined Braking System is known for its effective braking control. It ensures the required combination of front and rear brakes which make sure that the braking torque generated in required manner on front and rear wheel. CBS with ABS (Anti lock braking system) surely going to do wonder’s in braking department.

The new CBR250R got 296 mm disc with dual piston caliper for the front brake while the rear brake got 220 mm disc with single piston caliper. But the C-ABS system will come as option on CBR250R. The C-ABS version is 4Kg heavier than the non C-ABS version.

Styling and Instrument Panel

Front biased styling for motorcycle is trend in Japan and CBR250R has followed the same trend. The new CBR250R features a new full fairing and reinforces its sporty design with sophisticated and dynamic lines. In addition to its sporty look, the fairing proves comfortable for the driver side and weather disturbances. The new CBR250r got 55/60 watt light for its monoblock integrated headlight which makes the visibility better during night journeys. The front cowl and headlight is largely derived from the VFR1200F. The muscular tank and sharp rear tail look like derived from its larger sibling CBR1000RR. The concept of mass centralization is widely used while designing the bike.

The seat of CBR250R is just 31 inch (784mm) above the ground level which means even 5 feet 6 inch tall rider will not face any problem for seat height. . In addition, a separated seat that enables the rider to enjoy a wide variety of situations from touring to sports riding. Apart from this the new CBR250R is hosting a storage space under the seat that can carry easily a “U” tools on board or other rain gear. The position of handlebars and footpegs are in line with the seat to support a sporty driving style. The riding posture of CBR250R offers optimum comfort and safety. The airy cockpit provides ample amount of air around head and shoulder.

The new CBR250R got brand new multifunction LCD instrumentation panel which include speedometer, rpm meter, engine temperature, fuel gauge, clock and odometer. A neutral light is also there. With a brilliant blue LCD backlight, the display looks modern and futuristic. A special silencer with an irregular pentagonal section was chosen for the muffler design in order to reflect the cutting-edge design of Honda motorcycles.

Fuel Efficiency

Honda is known for its gasoline (petrol) fuel efficient engine throughout the world and the new CBR250 is not expectation. The new CBR250R is able to deliver fuel efficiently of 27Km/liter (WMTC mode). With 13 liter fuel tank it can give you range of more than 350 kilometer which is good enough for long rides.
